Whiteout Survival: Sonya Guide [2026]
Whiteout Survival hero guide
Sonya is one of three Mythic heroes introduced in Generation 8 (April 24, 2024). She is the Lancer-class option, alongside Gatot (Infantry) and Hendrik (Marksman). This guide covers her verified mechanics, the rotation logic that flows from those mechanics, the leveling priority for each viable build path, the resource economy of those paths, and the structural considerations that determine when she is the right Gen 8 pick.
Numerical values reported below come from cross-referenced community databases. Where databases conflict, the conflict is noted and the guide does not commit to disputed values. Server and patch variation may apply to event-driven content (acquisition rotations, shop pricing).

1. Core Mechanics
All canonical numbers are stated once in this section and referenced by name elsewhere in the guide. If a value appears repeated below, treat this section as the authoritative version.
Skill structure and mode applicability
Like all Mythic heroes, Sonya has 3 Exploration skills and 3 Expedition skills. The Mangrove Frog exclusive gear unlocks one additional skill on each side.
Exploration skills apply in hero-only combat — the Exploration map and the Arena. They behave as real-time abilities with cast and effect durations measured in seconds.
Expedition skills apply in troop-based combat — PvP marches, rallies, Polar Terror, and Bear Hunt. They resolve in turn-based combat where triggers are counted in attacks or turns rather than seconds.
The two skill sets do not overlap: Exploration skills contribute nothing in Expedition contexts, and vice versa. This is a foundational constraint behind the two-path build logic in §2.
Hero skills cap at Level 5. Reaching Level 5 requires the hero at 4★. Maxing one skill consumes 165 manuals matching Mythic rarity, distributed as 0 + 10 + 30 + 50 + 75 across the upgrade steps.
Exploration skills (hero-only modes)
Extreme Cold (Skill 1) — primary damage skill and the trigger for the freeze-loop combo.
- Damage: 220% / 240% / 260% / 280% / 300% of Attack
- Effects: freezes target for 1.5 seconds; deals AoE damage to nearby enemies
- Combo role: Once Chilled to the Bone is unlocked, the freeze ending triggers a 70%-Attack shatter. Extreme Cold therefore does double duty as opener and shatter setup.
Frozen Bomb (Skill 2) — area control with secondary damage.
- Damage: 100% / 110% / 120% / 130% / 150% of Attack (see note)
- Effects: reduces nearby enemies' Attack Speed by 50% for 3 seconds
- Combo role: The 3-second debuff outlasts the 1.5-second freeze, extending control uptime past the freeze→shatter window.
- Note: one database reports L5 as 140%; the 150% value is more widely cross-referenced. This guide uses 150% but flags the discrepancy.
Money-Hungry (Skill 3) — passive Attack buff.
- Levels 1–3: 10% / 15% / 20% Attack
- Levels 4–5: disputed across databases. Reported L5 values include 25%, 30%, and 50%, with corresponding variation at L4. Build planning should not assume a specific value at L4 or L5 until in-game verification is available.
Expedition skills (troop-based modes)
Treasure Hunter (Skill 1) — the rally-joiner skill.
- All troops: +4% / +8% / +12% / +16% / +20% damage
- Because rally joiners contribute only their first Expedition skill (top-right slot) from the hero in the first position of their march, this is the only Sonya skill that contributes when she joins someone else's rally.
Bounty Temptation (Skill 2) — sustained Lancer damage with a troop-wide buff.
- Lancers: +15% / +30% / +45% / +60% / +75% bonus damage every 2 attacks
- All troops: +5% / +10% / +15% / +20% / +25% Attack for 1 turn (refreshed each trigger)
- Rotation role: The all-troop buff and the Lancer bonus share the every-2-attacks trigger, so each proc layers offensive value on the entire march, not just Lancers.
Torrential Impact (Skill 3) — burst with crowd control.
- Lancers: +50% / +100% / +150% / +200% / +250% damage every 5 turns
- Stuns the target for 1 turn on trigger
- Rotation role: In engagements ending before turn 5, this skill provides nothing. Its value scales with engagement length.
Mangrove Frog (exclusive gear)
The Frog provides stat bonuses to Sonya and unlocks two additional skills. Frog widgets are Gen 8-specific. After Gen 9 begins, widgets become obtainable through Hall of Heroes widget chests at the discounted Marks-of-Valor rate (see Acquisition).
Reference stat values reported by community databases (not independently screenshot-verified):
- Exploration: +1,738 Attack, +1,738 Defence, +17,378 Health to Sonya
- Expedition: +193% Lethality, +193% Health to Lancer troops
- Power at max: 868,500
Chilled to the Bone (exclusive Exploration skill)
- Permanent +24% Attack at L5
- When Extreme Cold's freeze effect ends, shattered ice deals 70% Attack damage to nearby enemies
- This skill is the keystone of the freeze→shatter loop described in §3. Pre-Frog, Extreme Cold's freeze is purely a control effect; post-Frog, the freeze becomes a damage timer.
Vortex Turret (exclusive Expedition skill)
- Defender troops: +5% / +7.5% / +10% / +12.5% / +15% Lethality
- This skill applies only to Defenders, not Lancers. In a Lancer-led march it contributes nothing — its value is realized only when Sonya is paired into a Defender-troop context, which is uncommon for a Lancer hero.
- Note: the L5 value (15%) is widely cited; the intermediate scaling appears in a single specialized database and has limited cross-references.
Acquisition
Hero shards. Available during Sonya's active rotation through the Hero Rally event, Daily Deals, King of Icefield, State of Power, Hall of Chiefs, and the Foundry Shop. After Gen 8 retires, shards rotate into the Hall of Heroes shop, redeemable with Marks of Valor.
Marks of Valor. Hall of Heroes currency. Earned via 1 free daily claim per event, gem purchase (150 gems each, capped at 99 per event), or event packs. Marks are generation-specific and do not expire — they redeem only in their generation's shop.
Widget chests in Hall of Heroes. The most recent retired generation's chests cost 18 Marks. Each earlier generation costs 2 fewer Marks, with a floor of 10. Once Gen 9 begins, Sonya's Frog widgets are obtainable from Gen 8 chests at this rate.
2. Skill Leveling Priority
The optimal leveling order depends on whether Sonya is being built as a rally joiner, as a primary-march hero, or as a hybrid asset. The paths diverge significantly because rally mechanics restrict skill contribution and because Lancer-conditional skills lose value outside a Lancer-led march.
Path A: Rally joiner
Only Treasure Hunter contributes when Sonya joins a rally. Joiners pass the top-right Expedition skill of their first-march hero to the captain — and nothing else. Levels of any other skill, Exploration or Expedition, are irrelevant to the rally.
Rally joiner-skill mechanics. A rally applies only the first four valid joiner skills overall, with higher-level skills replacing lower-level ones if joiners overflow. In practice this means a Sonya joiner with Treasure Hunter at Level 5 will displace a lower-level joiner skill if the rally is over capacity. Coordinating Treasure Hunter levels across a rally group ensures the strongest version of each skill lands.
For pure rally-joiner use, investment can practicably stop at 4★ Sonya with Treasure Hunter at Level 5 and minimal exclusive-gear progression. Sonya's base stats and gear still affect joiner power, so meaningful Frog progression remains useful for rally power even though it doesn't add a skill — but additional skill manuals beyond Treasure Hunter add nothing to the rally itself.
Path B: Primary-march hero
For active main-march use across Exploration and Expedition contexts, prioritize by mechanical leverage:
- Extreme Cold — the highest damage multiplier in the kit (300% at L5) and the trigger for Chilled to the Bone's shatter once the Frog is unlocked. Drives the entire Exploration combo loop (§3).
- Bounty Temptation — the highest-uptime damage skill in Expedition. Every-2-attack Lancer damage compounds with the troop-wide Attack buff, scaling well across long fights.
- Torrential Impact — high burst with a turn-stun on a 5-turn timer. Conditional on engagement length; in short fights it may not trigger at all.
- Treasure Hunter — universally useful at +20% troop damage, and doubles as the rally-joiner contribution if Sonya ever rides along on someone else's rally. Level whenever spare Expedition manuals are available.
- Frozen Bomb — secondary control. The lower damage multiplier makes this the lowest-leverage Exploration skill in raw damage terms; level after the higher-priority skills.
- Money-Hungry — a passive Attack buff that should be a strong investment, but because L4 and L5 values are not reliably documented, treat L3 (20%) as the safe ceiling for committed planning. Investment beyond L3 is a calculated risk until the scaling is confirmed in-game.
Hybrid investment paths
Between the binary of pure joiner and full primary-march builds, two hybrids are practical:
Joiner-plus-Lancer-co-lead. Treasure Hunter L5 and Bounty Temptation L5, with the rest left at minimum. This produces a Sonya who functions as a strong rally joiner and as a meaningful co-hero in a Lancer-led march, at roughly twice the manual cost of Path A but well below Path B.
Joiner-plus-Frog. Path A leveling combined with full Mangrove Frog progression. The Frog adds Sonya's stat contribution and unlocks Vortex Turret for Defender contexts. This adds versatility without committing additional skill manuals to her base kit, and is a reasonable target when Sonya is primarily a joiner but might occasionally fit into Defender lineups.
Exclusive skills (post-Frog)
Chilled to the Bone scales with Sonya's overall Attack and triggers off Extreme Cold's freeze cycle, so its effective contribution grows alongside her base stats and her main-skill cadence. It compounds with both Extreme Cold's damage and Money-Hungry's passive buff — making the Frog disproportionately valuable for an Exploration-focused build.
Vortex Turret's Defender-only condition limits its applicability outside specific lineup contexts. Treat its value as marginal in Lancer-led builds and meaningful only when a Defender composition is being deliberately constructed.
3. Combat Rotations and Combo Mechanics
The skill descriptions in §1 imply specific interaction patterns when read together. This section makes those interactions explicit. All numbers referenced here are defined in §1.
Exploration: the freeze → shatter loop
The core Exploration combo activates only after the Mangrove Frog unlocks Chilled to the Bone. The loop runs as follows:
- Cast Extreme Cold. Deals up to 300% Attack as direct damage; freezes the target for 1.5 seconds; applies AoE damage to nearby enemies.
- Freeze window (1.5 seconds). The target cannot act. Sonya and allies can layer additional damage; Frozen Bomb is a natural follow-up because its 3-second Attack-Speed reduction extends control past the freeze.
- Freeze release. Chilled to the Bone triggers the shatter — 70% Attack damage to nearby enemies. This converts the freeze duration from a pure control effect into a guaranteed damage proc.
- Recast Extreme Cold when its cooldown allows, restarting the loop.
Pre-Frog, the loop is a single-target stun with AoE on cast. Post-Frog, every freeze cycle delivers an additional AoE shatter. This is the largest single power jump from Mangrove Frog progression for an Exploration-focused build.
Money-Hungry's passive Attack buff multiplies into both Extreme Cold's damage and the shatter's 70% Attack tick, so its value compounds across the loop — though, again, L4 and L5 scaling cannot be committed to without verification.
Expedition: sustained Lancer DPS rotation
Expedition combat resolves in turns, and Sonya's Expedition skills trigger on different counters:
- Treasure Hunter is passive — applies every turn.
- Bounty Temptation triggers every 2 (Lancer) attacks. Each trigger delivers Lancer bonus damage and refreshes the 1-turn troop-wide Attack buff.
- Torrential Impact triggers every 5 turns. Each trigger delivers Lancer burst damage and a 1-turn target stun.
In a 10-turn engagement, the rough activation profile is:
- Treasure Hunter: applied every turn (10 turns of contribution)
- Bounty Temptation: triggers approximately every other turn — five proc cycles, each refreshing the 1-turn buff
- Torrential Impact: triggers on turns 5 and 10 — two proc cycles
This shape produces a rising-burst rotation: damage compounds the longer the fight runs, because Bounty Temptation's troop-wide Attack buff is functionally always active during a sustained engagement, while Torrential Impact lands its biggest burst windows late.
Engagement-length sensitivity
A direct consequence of the rotation profile: Sonya's marginal value rises with engagement length. In short fights (1–4 turns), Torrential Impact never triggers and Bounty Temptation triggers only once or twice. In long fights (10+ turns), all three skills compound and the troop-wide Attack buff becomes near-permanent.
This makes Sonya structurally stronger in modes where engagements are extended (Polar Terror, Bear Hunt, sustained PvP rallies) than in modes resolved quickly. The implication for build planning: if Sonya's primary deployment is short-engagement content, the marginal return on Path B beyond Treasure Hunter and Bounty Temptation is reduced.
4. Resource Economy
This section quantifies the investment required by each build path, expressed in skill manuals, Marks of Valor, and star milestones.
Skill manual budget
Each Mythic skill costs 165 manuals to max (0 + 10 + 30 + 50 + 75). The base kit has 6 skills (3 Exploration + 3 Expedition). Maxing all six therefore costs 990 Mythic-rarity manuals across both pools (495 Exploration, 495 Expedition). The two exclusive skills add to this once the Frog is unlocked, with their own manual requirements following standard Mythic scaling.
Path-by-path manual cost (base kit only):
| Path | Skills maxed | Expedition manuals | Exploration manuals |
|---|---|---|---|
| A — Rally joiner | Treasure Hunter only | 165 | 0 |
| Hybrid (joiner + co-lead) | Treasure Hunter, Bounty Temptation | 330 | 0 |
| B — Full primary march | All six | 495 | 495 |
Path A is the cheapest viable Sonya build by a wide margin. The hybrid sits at roughly 2× Path A; Path B is roughly 6× Path A.
Marks of Valor and Hall of Heroes
Marks of Valor are earned at 1 per day free per event, plus up to 99 gem-purchased per event at 150 gems each (a maximum of 14,850 gems for full mark purchase per event, exclusive of event-pack alternatives). Marks are generation-specific and do not expire, but they redeem only in their generation's shop.
Once Gen 9 begins, Sonya's Frog widgets become available in Gen 8 widget chests at 18 Marks each. As later generations release, the price decreases by 2 Marks per generation passed, with a floor of 10. A player who delays Frog completion across multiple generation cycles will pay less per chest but will also have foregone the in-rotation completion window.
Star milestones and Frog progression
Sonya's star level governs skill-level caps. The verified milestone is that Level 5 on any skill requires 4★. Going beyond 4★ adds stat scaling but does not unlock additional skill levels.
Mangrove Frog progression is the second major investment axis. The Frog unlocks two exclusive skills and provides substantial stat bonuses (see §1). For Path A, minimal Frog investment is acceptable; for Path B, full Frog progression is the dominant late-game power lever, particularly for Exploration builds where Chilled to the Bone gates the freeze→shatter combo.
Specific gear breakpoints that unlock the exclusive skills are not reliably documented across community sources and are not stated here.
5. Lineup Composition Principles
This guide does not prescribe specific named lineup partners. Such recommendations rely on relative valuations of other heroes that vary across player rosters, account states, and event-driven hero availability. The principles below describe the structural roles Sonya fills.
As a rally joiner
Place Sonya in the first slot of your joining march. Treasure Hunter is the only rally-relevant skill she contributes. The other heroes in the joining march do not contribute their skills to the rally — only their stats matter, for capacity and base power.
Build prioritization in this mode is shard-and-Treasure-Hunter-first. Gear and Expedition manual investment elsewhere has no rally-skill impact, though base stats from gear continue to feed into joiner power and rally capacity.
When coordinating a rally group, recall that only the four highest-level joiner skills apply. A Sonya joiner is most valuable in the group when her Treasure Hunter is at or above the level of competing joiners' first Expedition skills.
As a rally leader
Sonya leads best as the captain of a Lancer-heavy or Lancer-pure march, where Bounty Temptation and Torrential Impact's Lancer-conditional bonuses apply to most or all of the troops. Mixed marches dilute her Lancer-specific skills — they still contribute, but a portion of the march receives only the troop-wide effects (Treasure Hunter's flat damage; Bounty Temptation's 1-turn Attack buff).
Co-heroes whose Expedition Skill 1 either benefits Lancers specifically or applies broadly to all troops will further amplify the rally when joiners follow the same pattern. The first-Expedition-skill priority shapes joiner selection more than any other factor.
In Exploration / Arena
Sonya is a combat hero with high single-target damage and a freeze-based control loop. She benefits from teammates whose Exploration skills:
- Apply offensive buffs that compound with her Attack-multiplier kit
- Provide healing or damage mitigation, since she remains a melee Lancer despite her freeze cycle
- Inflict additional debuffs on frozen targets, capitalizing on the 1.5-second window opened by Extreme Cold
Specific pairings depend on which Exploration heroes are available in your roster. There is no single dominant pairing because viable supports rotate by generation and event availability.
6. Gen 8 Selection Context
Generation 8 introduces one Mythic per troop type:
- Sonya — Lancer (combat)
- Gatot — Infantry
- Hendrik — Marksman
The choice between them is, at a structural level, a question of which troop type your account is invested in — not which hero is "best" in isolation. Furnace troop tier focus, gear investment (Lancer Goggles vs. Infantry Helmet vs. Marksman Hat), and the existing hero pool by class largely determine which Gen 8 Mythic provides the most marginal return.
Sonya is the right pick when:
- The account is Lancer-focused (Lancer Goggles upgraded; Lancer combat heroes already invested)
- A Lancer-class Mythic combat hero is the specific gap — older Lancer Mythics may already be saturated, leaving Sonya as the marginal upgrade
- A flexible rally-joiner asset is wanted, since Treasure Hunter is troop-agnostic at +20% and useful regardless of the rally captain's troop type
- Expected engagements skew long (Polar Terror, Bear Hunt, sustained PvP), where the rotation profile in §3 favors her
Sonya is not the right pick over Gatot or Hendrik when:
- The account focuses on Infantry or Marksman compositions
- A strong Lancer Mythic combat hero is already in place and the gap is in another class
- Expected engagements skew short, reducing the value of Torrential Impact and dampening Bounty Temptation's stacking
This guide does not rank Sonya against Gatot or Hendrik on absolute power. Cross-class hero comparisons depend on troop composition, gear investment, and event-specific demands that vary too much account-to-account to generalize.
7. Disputed and Unverified Values
This section consolidates every value in the guide that is not safely verified, so readers can apply their own judgment.
- Frozen Bomb L5: reported as 140% by one database, 150% by others. The guide uses 150%.
- Money-Hungry L4–L5: disputed across databases; reported L5 values include 25%, 30%, and 50%. The guide treats L3 (20%) as the safe ceiling.
- Vortex Turret intermediate scaling: the L5 value (15%) has wide cross-references; the 5% / 7.5% / 10% / 12.5% intermediate progression appears in a single specialized database.
- Mangrove Frog stat bonuses: database-extracted reference values; not independently screenshot-verified.
- Sonya's Expedition stat buffs to Lancer troops (commonly reported as +780.62% Attack and Defence at reference state): from a single fan database; calculation methodology not verified.
- Specific shard quantities per star level for Sonya: while standard Mythic shard requirements are widely reported as 20 / 50 / 100 / 150, no source explicitly confirms Sonya follows this progression rather than any potential variation.
- Gear breakpoints unlocking exclusive skills (Chilled to the Bone, Vortex Turret): specific Frog levels at which each skill becomes available are not consistently documented across community sources.
Optimal gear levels, recommended build orders, and tier-list rankings are not included because such recommendations depend on player-specific account context and are not derivable from verified game mechanics.
